Peoria runs a long way north. The older neighborhoods sit close to the 101 and reach Sky Harbor in thirty five minutes on a reasonable morning. The newer communities up around Vistancia and Happy Valley are a different proposition, closer to fifty minutes, and the 303 and Loop 101 are the only sensible way down.
That spread is the thing to plan around. A pickup time that works from Thunderbird and 83rd will not work from north of the 303, and we set each one from the actual address rather than from a single figure for the city.
Sky Harbor handles almost everything for this side of the Valley, and the run south on the 101 to the 202 or down through the I 17 is straightforward outside of rush hour. We set the pickup from your flight number and track the inbound on the return, so an early landing brings the car forward and a delay does not cost you.
Parking is the argument that makes this obvious for northwest Valley residents. It is a long drive to leave a car at the airport for a week and a longer one to collect it at the end of a red eye. A car in both directions removes the drive at both ends of the trip, which is when you least want it.
For groups traveling together, a full size SUV or a Sprinter takes the whole party and the luggage in one movement rather than splitting families across two vehicles.
The Cactus League is Peoria's busiest season and the sports complex sits right in the middle of the city. Two clubs train here, the games fill February and March, and the parking situation on a good afternoon is exactly what you would expect.
Being dropped at the gate and collected at an agreed point away from the crowd is a far better day, particularly when the afternoon involves more than one beer. We run groups from hotels, from private homes and from other cities in the Valley, and we hold the vehicle so nobody is waiting on a ride afterward.
The stadium and arena district next door in Glendale works the same way for concerts, football and hockey, and the drive home from those is the part worth handing over.
Lake Pleasant is the best thing about living in this part of the Valley and the least convenient to organize. Boat days, sunset trips and group outings all involve a drive up the 74 and a drive back afterward, usually by somebody who would rather not.
We handle the transport end of it, collecting a group and returning them, which makes the whole day work without a designated driver. The desert north of the city, the trailheads and the golf out toward Vistancia and Blackstone all fall into the same category. Pleasant to visit, tiresome to drive to and from.
Peoria weddings tend to spread out, because the venues are spread out. A ceremony at a church or a golf club, photographs somewhere in the desert or by the water, and a reception at a resort or event space can put twenty five miles on the day without leaving the northwest Valley.
We plan the timing around the heat and the light rather than the mileage. From May through September the schedule has to keep people indoors or in a cooled vehicle, and the photography window is the last hour before sunset regardless of what the timeline says. Guest shuttles in Sprinters run from the hotels, which keeps the parking under control and keeps everyone off the road at the end of the night.
The P83 district handles most local nights, with the restaurants and bars clustered close enough that a group can move between them on foot once they are dropped. Beyond that, an evening usually means driving to Scottsdale or downtown Phoenix, and from north Peoria that is a long way there and a longer way back.
One vehicle for the party is simpler than three cars and a volunteer, and it turns a forty five minute drive home into part of the evening rather than the price of it.
